Community Child Care
In 2020, City Council received the results of the Greater Vernon Child Care Space Action Plan. During the research and development of the Plan, residents in the Greater Vernon area expressed a great need for child care resources. Below is information to help parents and caregivers find child care opportunities in the North Okanagan.
Province of B.C. resources and information
Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR) centres make it easier for families to find and access responsive and inclusive quality licensed and registered child care by providing information, support, resources and referral services to parents and child care providers across the province. The Ministry of Children and Family Development provides funding to CCRRs, which work in partnership with government to improve the accessibility, affordability, and quality of child care in all B.C. communities.
Local resources and information
The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club has been a vital part of the Vernon community since 1966. They offer daycare, after school programs, and youth and family programs. The Club serves the communities of Armstrong, Cherryville, Falkland, Lavington, Lumby, Vernon, and Spallumcheen.

The Maven Lane child care and early learning centres have been providing child care since 1994. They offer Infant/Toddler & 3-5 Programs, after school and out of school care programs in the communities of Armstrong, Coldstream, Lavington, and Vernon.

The Social Planning Council for the North Okanagan is a non-profit society dedicated to social planning services. Additional resources for community child care can be found on its website.
The Greater Vernon Community Child Care Space Action Plan was developed through the input of childcare providers and community feedback from citizens in the Greater Vernon area. This plan helps inform local and senior levels of government on the current and future needs of child care in the region. The Action Plan provides guidance to support the creation and/or expansion of child care services over the next 10 years and the recommended action items to help remove some of the barriers to accessing quality, affordable child care.
Child Care Action Plan
In 2020, City Council received the results of the Greater Vernon Child Care Space Action Plan. The strategies put forward in that plan resulted in the City’s application for infrastructure grants to increase the number of child care spaces for the citizens of Greater Vernon.
The City’s applications to the BC Child Care Space Creation program were successful and $6 million in project funding was awarded for two new child care centres. A UBCM Community Child Care Space Creation Program grant for $1 million was also received as a top up and funding source to provide the infant/toddler spaces at the Recreation Complex Child Care Facility. The total funding received for both projects is $7 million.
The two new facilities are scheduled to be open to provide child care by the fall of 2022 and will make a significant impact in meeting the community need for child care.
